Glory Box

23 08 2006

I’ve had a glory box for quite a few years now.  At least since I was in primary school.  And with me getting all prepared to move out of home, it was time for me to go through it and toss out stuff that I really dont need to keep.

See, I’ve been using it as a bit of a time capsule rather than for linens when I get married….

When i finally moved my telly and stereo off it I was pleasantly surprised at what I had stashed in there last time – a heap of my kids clothes and toys 🙂  they all got moved to a new box and properley labeled.  I also found a few of my cadet items (ie, my old hat and rank badges), which are currently awaiting a new box to be bought.  Oh, and my yukata that was given to me on my first japan trip.  Most of that stuff really shouldnt have been in there, but its worked well for the time.

Now all thats in the glory box are all my letters from high school, some photos, school projects, etc.  And what really made me laugh is I found my teenage mutant ninja turtle scrapbook and all my Dean Cain articles that I collected when I was obsessed by Lois and Clark.  hehe….

Head over to my flickr page if you wanna see all my school photos 🙂

I had a bit of a winge on 43things yesterday about the fact I just dont seem to be getting my exercise/sleep right.  And lo and behold, someone sent me a very useful link!

Personal Development for Smart People

The articles that I’ve been reading are “How to get up right away when your alarm goes off” and “How to become an early riser“.  I’ll tell you now, the stuff on this site is GOLD!

Due to my work situation I unfortunately cant really apply much of what I’ve read, but there are a few things I think I’ll give a go.  I really cant wait til Im in Japan and can actually have a somewhat normal schedule in which I *can* work on this sort of stuff.

And as a final little note, I did go to the gym today, and Im very happy about that fact.  I also plan on going everyday this week, since at this point in time there is nothing to prevent me.  gambatte!

Found a very amusing term in my Flight Safty Australia magazine.  Post-alcohol impairment (PAI).  Another term for a hang over.  heheh

writing trials and tribulations

8 08 2006

I’ve been journal-ing..  omg.  me.  journal.  haha

Okay, I probably should explain.  I am not very good at keeping diaries/journals/blogs etc.  I usually write a few days and then leave it sitting for a while.  a long while.  I have to admit, I’ve had my good times and bad times with this particular blog.  But never do I manage to last very long with a written journal.  guess I just dont make the time.

But Im going off on a bit of a tangent.  back to topic.  I’ve been journal-ing.  and I have to admit Im really liking it.  I decided that I would journal my final 3 months here in Aus, because its a really busy time, and knowing me I would forget things and what not.  So I decided that if I journal-ed I could probably keep track of things a little better and also have a record of the journey that Im taking.

I think Im really enjoying it because I’ve taken a very different approach to what I have done previously.  Ive always written diaries with the mind set that it is a record of my emotions and the events that happen in my life.  This time around Im really just writing anything.  So far I’ve written an explanation for having a journal, done a few lists of things I have to do before I go, things I want to do in japan, what Im looking for out of life there, and then a few entries about just whats going through my head.  Oh, and Im decorating it with cut outs, pictures, and stickers.  And I think that it is going to be a really interesting record when its finished.  And probably something that I wouldnt be too adverse to letting other people read.  not that Im going to invite it or anything.

downside for you, I probably wont be writing in here all that often for a while, since it will probably be all written down in the journal

Werewolves of London

29 07 2006

Werewolves of London
~Warren Zevon
I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook’s
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
Ah-oo, Werewolves of London
If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Ah-oo, Werewolves of London
He’s the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he’s been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He’ll rip your lungs out, Jim
I’d like to meet his tailor
Ah-oo, Werewolves of London
Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic’s
And his hair was perfect
Ah-oo, Werewolves of London

Bad Back?

28 07 2006

Donna Aston Our sedentary lifestyles — slumped over computers all day — along with a lack of fitness are major factors. However, trainer Donna Aston says it doesn’t have to be that way.

“When it comes to bad backs, a few of the major issues are flexibility, or lack of flexibility, lack of strength, and also poor posture. So with those three things together, if we can work on those it really does help to create strength and prevent back injury.

Donna has devised a set of exercises to give us all super spines.

Exercise one: abdominal bridge
Draw the navel tightly in towards the spine like you’ve got somebody pulling a string up — make sure you keep your spine straight. An incorrect way of doing this would cause a sag in the back which is going to put a lot of unnecessary pressure on the back muscles.

Exercise two: squats
Bend from the knees and sit your bottom out, as if you’re sitting on a seat. Your back is very straight. An incorrect way of doing this would be the hips rolling forward and all the weight shifts into the knees which puts a lot of pressure on the knee joint as well as through the lower back.

Exercise three: back extension
Lift a little with your upper body, lifting your chest and your arms off the floor and feeling these muscles contract into your lower back, these are all the erector muscles that align your spine.

Like most things in life, when it comes to your back, the fitter you are, the better you’ll be. A bad back is no longer a sentence to bed rest — moderate exercise is the key to recovery, but remember, if you are feeling pain always see a medical professional before starting a fitness regime.
