ladies day

20 12 2006

God Bless Wednesdays!  In Japan they have this thing called Ladies Day at all the cinemas.  Im not sure if its because statistically there are more women than men, or if its because women control the household budget here, or even if its just a ploy to get all the housewives to get along to the movies, but it certainly makes my life a lot nicer!~  And thats because all movies are just 1000yen for all women on a Wednesday   And I have a cinema at my station that has late screenings I can go to after I finish work

Yesterday we all went to see the new Bond film.  It was long, but I certainly didn’t feel it.  Its probably not everyone’s cup of tea, cause its not quite the image of Bond we all know, but it had tons of action and a pretty intresting plot.  Oh, and beautiful locations!!!

So now Im just trying to decide what I’ll go see after work next week~

well, spent some time on the weekend just bumming around on the computer, and I finally went pro with my flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/michelelisa/  which means you can view all my photos and I’m able to sort them into to albums.  go check it out!

This weekend Pete and I also finally made it to Disneyland to see the christmas lights.  I love Disney so much, but boy it’s a tiring day…  We arrived at the park at 9am (an hour after it opened) and left on closing time (10pm).  But it was a great day.  Unfortunately my favourite ride – space mountain – was closed, but there were other seasonal things to see.  Like the Haunted Mansion done up with the Nightmare Before Christmas characters – it was really great!

you can check out my photos here, or some videos of the electrical parade here

i know I’ve been pretty slack on the updates/emails front, but I’ve only had the internet for a week and 3 days PLUS i’ve been quite sick in that time, so the chances to use it are not that extensive…  I think things will calm down somewhat in the next week..  but its certainly not like at home when I used to use the internet everyday.  I suppose Im still adjusting to a 30 hour work week and the hours…  (usually 1pm to 9pm)

anyhow, I got something totally blog worthy in the mail today – my first parcel from home!!!  and its got so many christmas goodies!  the short list –

  • fruit mince cookies
  • pudding (x2)
  • candy canes
  • honey jumbles
  • continental pastas
  • SOUP!  (other than corn! horay!)
  • cereal and breaky bars
  • lollies and choccies
  • assorted little pressies for ppl

its so nice to get mail!  (hey, Im not descriminating here, even letters are really really exciting!)

by the way, did i mention my mobile phone has a tv?  check it out, its so cool – http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/3g/905sh/index.html

first monthly newsletter – november

11 12 2006

 Hey there everyone!

Its been a month and a day since arriving here in Japan, so its probably about time I wrote you all an update, yes??  ðŸ™‚

Well, starting from the start, I touched down in Tokyo late November 1st, with my flight over being hassle-free and business class all the way (horay!).  I stayed with Christina for the first few nights before going to training, and it was really great to see her since I wanst able to go to her wedding in Hawaii on Thanksgiving.

I had to make my way to the training center in Omiya for AEON on that friday, however our training didnt start until Saturday morning.  So, that friday afternoon I spent wandering around Omiya.  Omiya is actually where my friend Rikas parents live, so Im somewhat familiar with the area.  Theres a pretty big shrine there, and being that it
was Shichi Go San (7, 5, 3) day, there were heaps of families at the shrine getting blessed in traditional clothes.  On that day you are supposed to take children of those ages to the shrine, so it can be pretty cute.

The next week and a little was spent at training.  It was pretty full on in some respects, but actually a lot easier than the training I had with NOVA previously.  Or maybe it was because I was more experienced…  The hardest thing about the whole week would have had to been the fact we were 10 people living in the training facility. We had 5 americans, 2 canadians, and 3 aussies.  Although we wernt supposed to bring grog into the facility, the majority of the others did, and ended up staying up until really really late in the evening. Or should I say morning.  Needless to say, this really really didnt agree with me, but what can you do.

We did have the first sunday off, and then the second weekend.  On the first Saturday, Brooke (another aussie) and me went to Asakusa, which has one of the most famous temples in Japan there.  Its one of my
favourite places to go in Tokyo because you can buy really fresh traditional japanese foods there.  On the second weekend I really didnt do much because we went to karaoke on friday night to celebrate finishing training, and that sort of knocked be about.  Never again will I go to karaoke with a bunch of smokers..  Not very pleasant at
all….  trying to sing in a room full of smokers.

But dont let me give you the wrong impression of my training group, they are a bunch of great people, i just personally dont like to party every night.  And I have made some great friends from training!  Most of us live in Tokyo, so its pretty easy to catch up, not that Ive had the chance yet to, unfortunately.

On Monday the 13th I was off to my branch school to start work.  For the first week there they had to put me in a hotel, since there was an overlap with the girl I was replacing.  But the manager was very organised and that monday we went and did all the paperwork for my id card and bank, and even got my mobile phone.  Other people from training are still waiting!

I started at the school on the tuesday, and for the first few days I was just observing classes, which was nice, but pretty boring.  By Saturday I was teaching full adult lessons, and part kids lessons.

My school (AEON Hikarigaoka) is pretty big.  Theres 3 other foreign teachers (from the US), and 7 japanese teachers, on top of the office staff.  And for students we have about 250 adult students, and over 400 kids students.

Im really enjoying teaching with AEON so far.  The lessons are well structured and the text books are interesting.  Im still finding my feet with kids classes, but once I learn a few more games and get to know my students Im sure ill feel more comfortable.  I work tuedays to fridays from either midday or 1 until 9 in the evening, and on saturdays I work from 10 to 7pm.  But we get plenty of breaks, and we have some other duties which are pretty varied, so it hasnt been boring so far.

Now, back to where we were…  On Monday the 20th I finally moved into my apartment (and believe me, that was an effort….)  And since then I have been putting most of my efforts into just settling in.  The
girl who lived there before left it in a pretty big mess, so Ive spent a lot of time cleaning.  Hopefully by tomorrow evening Ill finally have everything clean to my standards.  Oh, and unfortunately I also caught a cold, which zapped my energy for about a week and a half. Today is actually the first day in a while that ive felt up to speed. (But it wasnt a bad cold)

So between cleaning and sleeping I cant say Ive been up to much.  Ive been into Shinjuku and Ikebukuro a couple of times to do a little shopping and to meet up with people…  Funny thing is that one of my friends (Peter) happens to only be living 2 stations away from me, so we`ve managed to catch up a few times.  Also went out for dinner tonight with some of the girls from work.  The great thing about the station I work at is there are heaps of restaurants around it.  We had Korean tonight and it was pretty good.

Hopefully now with being almost fully settled Ill be able to get out more and do things.  And I`ll have the internet at home from tuesday, so you might be able to see me online more often!

19 days

19 11 2006

well, tomorrow will be the 20th, and I will finally be moving into my apartment…  20 days of living out of a duffel….  you’d think i’ve joined the army???

This past week has been, on a whole, tiring.  Its been all well and good observing at my new school, but after a day or so it becomes really hard to hide the yawns in class.  By Thurs I was teaching all the adult classes on my schedule, so it hasn’t been so bad.  And its funny how you can see the improvement in yourself really really quickly…

After finishing training, I was told that my aim should be to learn the steps to the lessons better.  and, well, after 2 days of work it seems I’ve pretty much got it down packed.  Now I think my personal aims are to in general improve my familiairty with what Im teaching, and work on my time management….  and I’m not even going to begin on what I need to do for kids classes…

Everyone I work with is lovely.  But its going to be really difficult replacing Stacee.  She’s been here for 2 years and 3 months, and is really loved and a great teacher…  I just hope my students will bear with me for the next few months til I get a handel on everything.

Last night we had the going away/welcome party at the school and I managed to mingle with some of the students.  It was a good night overall, with us finishing up at karaoke 🙂  oh-boy….  they really shouldn’t give me a microphone…..  and drinkies…..  (shakes head)

Since I’ll be moving into the apartment tomorrow I’ll be cut off from the internet, so no regular updates (not that they were to begin with).  Im hoping to get the net really soon, so it shouldn’t be too long…  I apoligise if im a bit slow replying to anyone, etc.

Its been one week since you looked at me, cocked your head to the side and said….

11 11 2006

Wow.  Things have been such a whirlwind since I got into the Omiya training house.  Training for Aeon has been full on, but pretty rewarding.  And now it’s over! (for the time being….)

Um, its hard to really know what to say.  We’ve done so much in this past week, but I really don’t want to bore you with the little details….

Well, from the beginning.  I touched down at Narita around 8pm on Nov 1st, and the lovely Xina and Jason were kind enough to have me stay with them for the first 2 evenings.  On the Friday I had to make my own way out to Omiya to be met by some of my trainers and be taken to the training house.

I met all my fellow trainees that day, and then the following day we actually started training.  Sunday Brooke (another aussie) and I went into Asakusa and Shinjuku to do a little sightseeing.  And then Monday through to Friday has been all training, training, training.

The group I’ve been training with are all pretty nice people.  I won’t lie and say that I get along with all personalities here, but there’s only ten of us and we are a fairly close knit group.  Mind you, a majority of the group really really like to party, and I’m just not up to that.  Every night.  Until late….. (shakes head)

On Friday night after we finished our training we all went out to an Izakaiya for drinks and some pub grub, and then headed on over to karaoke.  It was a pretty good evening, even if Cindy (American, and strangely enough a physics major too) and I ended up leave a few hours before everyone else.  What can I say….  I act older than my age???

Today hasn’t been much, just some wandering around Omiya.  Unfortunately it was a pretty poor day weather wise so that restricted me a bit.  I was looking forward to spending some time in the park just relaxing and reading my book.

Tomorrow I’ve arranged to meet up with Peter in Ikebukuro and just hang out.  Hopefully the weather will be somewhat better.  I don’t want to have a huge day because next week’s also going to be killer.

On Monday I’ll be taken to my new school, and they’ll set up my bank account and help me find a mobile phone.  Which, believe me, I’m really really feeling.   I guess having a mobile is a bit of a security blanket….  And then on Tues and Wed I’ll be observing classes.  On Thurs it seems I’ll actually be teaching….  Which is a little scary… but I can do this!!! (pep talk..)

The internet situation here is rather intermittent, so although I want to email everyone, it looks like I wont have the chance.  I really sorry!!!  I’ll also try to upload some photos to my flickr, but I really can’t promise anything….  We’ll see how it all goes.

Training day one

4 11 2006

well, I’ve made it!  Japan again!  horay!

um, I really don’t have much to report on so far.  The flight was really good, I had business class seats all the way, and it really makes a difference.  Esp when there are only 2 other people in business class other than yourself.  And on top of that the plane arrived a quarter of an hour early, so i was able to get through security and customs fast, send my bags on, and then catch the 845pm train, which got me to Xina’s station about an hour earlier than I otherwise would have.

Um, thursday and friday haven’t been much, just a lot of walking….  maybe I’ll be losing all the fat I’ve managed to put on in the last month quickly….  Thursday I just wandered around shinjuku for a bit, and then on friday Xina, Jason and I all went out to a french cafe for lunch before I had to leave to be met for work.  Now I know where to go in tokyo to get great fancy meat pies and really yumm bread…  I think i would be lost without christina~!

After been taxied to the training house I went for a bit of a walk, theres a pretty big shrine and park here that’s pretty, so I went to check it out. And it was shichi-go-san day, so there were heaps of kids in kimono around the place, all very cute.

It should be illegal

15 10 2006

It should be illegal to have so much fun on your last day at work

Firstly I made cupcakes for everyone who was working with me, and who work in RM

cupcakesSkulls and crossbones, arrrrr!  Unfortunately I just didn’t have the time to do all of them with skulls, but Im pretty happy with how they all turned out~ I put them in the fridge at work and drew a treasure map in the diary that hopefully everyone will be able to figure out where I hid the buried treasure….

And continuing on with the Piratical theme, I put signs up all over the place in a very piratey looking font, with things like ‘Crew only (no scurvy landlubbers allowed)’, ‘Rrrrrrrr. M. Williams’, and ‘Sea Shanties only!’ (for the cd player).  I hope everyone gets a giggle out of it today.

bobandbobbet

And finally, continuing with a tradition set by Karin (I think), I re-dressed Bob and Bobbette.   Not sure how Penny would have taken it this morning.  Hans certainly got a kick out of it last night…

Goodbye RM!  Goodbye AWPL!

And now, Im freeeeeee!!!!!!!!

too hopeful?

12 10 2006

Seems I’ve caught soccer fever too…

Last week saw the Socceroos vs Paraguay in my hometown (alas tickets were not to be had by me).  In my very qualified opnion (I watched the previous two world cups???  and a couple of roar home games…..) it wasn’t the best played game, but it was exciting and had a very good climax towards the ends.  including the goal australia scored for paraguay….  oh I feel sorry for the guy that did that…..  That game in itself wasn’t really important and didn’t really count for anything, but it was a good day.

Earlier this week it was Socceroos vs Bahrain, and this match *was* important – qualifier for the Asian Cup Quals.  And Im really glad to say we did win 2-0, but I only saw the second half, and boy was it boring.  I guess Sydney doen’t put the party on quite as much as BrisVegas!

Hearing about the Asian Cup upcoming next year I got all excited that maybe it would be in Japan.  But that was just wishful thinking.  How cool would it be to see Aust play in Japan???  But its being held in Indo, Malay, Thai and Viet.  Ah well.  At least we’ve Qualified!  and there’ll be some pretty intresting soccer on next year.

But i must keep an eye out, you never know I might be lucky and have the socceroos play in Japan at some point in time……
