Kyoto!

10 06 2007

Well, in late May, Lauren arrived from sunny BrisVegas to visit little ol’ me in the sometimes raining (its almost rainy season…)  Tokyo.

It was really great to have a friend here, since Im feeling a little homesick.  Im am especially looking forward to August when I can go home for a week, but til then Lauren left me some TimTams to tide me over.

We only had one full weekend to spend together, so I took an extra day off work and we went to Kyoto.  Kyoto was great, this was my second time to go and I can say I had a much better time this go.  Kyoto’s bus system has vastly improved for foreign tourists, now they have ENGLISH!  wow.

Anyway, we only had 2 and a half days to spend there, but we managed to pack quite a bit in.  We went to Kiyomizu-dera on the sunday, which was packed, particularly at the ‘love shrine’ by school kids.  And from there we walked down to the Gion district where we actually caught a glimpse of a Meiko (geisha in training), in her everyday kimono (aka, not dressed up fancy, just with her hair done up).

On the Monday we went to Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is this mountain covered in small shrines and heaps of red Torii gates.  It was quite striking.  We climbed to the top and ate lunch looking over Kyoto city.  And then got lost trying to get back down (but not too badly).  Not to mention both of our legs were really complaining by then.  We then headed over to Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion) and did some shopping in the shopping arcade.

Finally on Tuesday we went to Nijo-jo, which was a castle used by the Shogun.  It was really cool because it had nightingale floors (the squeaky floors) to stop intruders.  But they really do sound like birds tweeting.  After walking around there, we were at a bit of a lose of what to do.  Both of us had really tired legs (in fact, mine didn’t stop hurting until Friday or so), so we had to veto any major walking or places with stairs.  So we decided to go to Osaka, which is only a 30 minute train trip from Kyoto.  Once we got there we went to Osaka castle.  It really tall, so we were very lucky they they had an elevator….  Was quite an intrusting museum inside.

And then finally we went home…  phew, what a weekend!

miniscule

the only, one, slightly, tiniest redeeming feature of today was one of my students cancelled his private half hour lesson.

other than that it was the day from hell.

that is all.

Amuse me…

23 05 2007

A couple of interesting things have happened at work over the past week.

Kaito, one of my kids is such a laugh (and thats great because he is the only kid in that class).  Last weeks vocab was ‘do judo’, so, he tries to do judo.  on me.  his technique seemed pretty good to me, however, being only 1/3 of my height, well, he just couldn’t flip me over his shoulder.  It was quite funny.

I also got a letter from another of my students, Kazumasa (kid also), saying “Let’s play together”  it was quite sweet.

Finally, on Tuesday evening, there was a fire in the neighboring apartment building at work, which resulted in a siren and warnings blaring out of the speaker systems for about 15 minutes.  Alas, when we finished work all the excitement was over.  I guess fire alarms and drills still give you the same kind of excitement as when you are a kid!

Golden Week and Thailand!

15 05 2007

Well, Im slowly working backwards to get this up-to-date.  Excuse my lax-ness in keeping my blog current.

Anyway.  About the first week of May in Japan is a holiday called Golden Week.  Its not a proper week holiday, but because there are about 3 or 4 public holidays in the week, most people have it all off.  The public holidays include Children’s day (formerly Boys day) and Green day (yes, the Japanese celebrate the Emperor who planted cedar trees everywhere and consequently causes great pains to hayfever sufferers come spring).    But because almost everyone has the time off, many places are very busy and crowded, and airfares overseas are very expensive.

Despite the high cost I decided to go to Thailand with one of the girls from work, Sophie.  We were only able to arrange to stay 4 nights, 5 days in Phuket, but it really was worth it.  Phuket is a tourist trap, and to be honest, I felt like I could have been at Noosa or somewhere on the Sunshine Coast – there were that many Aussies…..  Except the surf wasn’t good at all.  But it was still nice to go swimming everyday, and work on my tan.  (I only got a little burnt!)

So, what did we get up to?  Well, there was plenty of going to the beach, shopping, going to the beach, eating, drinking, going to the beach….  well, you get the idea.  We also took a day boat tour to Phi Phi Island, where part of the Beach was filmed.  I can honestly say that I have never seen water so beautiful.  It was more green than blue.  As part of the tour we also got to go snorkeling, which really didn’t tickle my fancy.  I guess I get a bit freaked out by fish…  But Sophie really enjoyed it.

Another day we went into Phuket town (we were staying at Patong Beach), and did a lot of walking around.  It was quite a curious place, the style of buildings were almost out of place.  But the temples were beautiful, and we didn’t even go the the famous one in the area.

Other impressions.  Well, you could hardly tell that Patong beach had been hit by the tsunami a few years back.  Although there were some signs of damage, most places had been repaired and it was all pretty nice, well, as nice as a beach side area can be.  I have to admit, even though you pay for beach chairs, the whole atmosphere on the beach is different because of them.  Its nice that all you have to do is signal and the guy will bring you over a beer or fruit or something.  Oh, and it was so nice having so much fresh fruit!

Overall, I enjoyed the holiday very much, but I can’t say I’ll ever go back to Phuket again.  However I do think that I will return to Thailand, maybe Bangkok or the north…..

As mentioned before, photos are online here.

映画館に行った~

13 05 2007

I finally got around to seeing Spiderman 3 this evening (you have no idea how much I love living near a movie theater)

but I left the cinema saying to myself…  snow patrol is stalking me….

Okay, so stalking is a little strong, but it feels like I hear them everywhere I go… and lo and behold, they have a song on the spiderman soundtrack.   grrrrrrrr!  argh!

I cannot describe how much I dislike snow patrol…  see, I wont even capitalize they name.  tisk tisk..  Its not that their music is bad, but they have been overplayed.  I *thought* I had escaped it when I left AUS, but, despite the fact I dont even own a radio here, I have still been hearing chasing cars….  which means it must have a high rotation or something….

But apart from that, the movie was pretty good, as well as the rest of the soundtrack (anything Danny Elfman does has my stamp of approval).  But I have to admit, it wasn’t as good as the last two.

I only really saw it for Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell.  Oh how I love their work!

other interesting things – it appears that there will be a new Neon Genesis Evangelion something released…  on my birthday too…  here’s some hearsay in english – http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2006-09-07/new-evangelion-movies

and, ahem, I went to Thailand by the way…  will write about that later…  in the meantime photos are here.

omgosh….  michele in her swimsuit (and Sophie too)  dont blink, it might be the last time you see it…..
