my results for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) came… I passed! Yatta! Huzzah for good measure!

right, so I got really really sick on friday night, and couldnt go to work yesterday. Its just a stomach bug, but man I really hate being sick.
On the other hand, I went to the doctors in Japan for the first time, which was quite an experience. You dont go to a doctors’ clinic here, you go to hospital. And to pay, you use an ATM.. all quite different.
In Japan they have this nifty system so that if you want to know what a drug is, all you have to do is look up the code. Mum and I were just checking out my medications using Babelfish, and Im sure in Japanese its pretty normal instruction, but the translation is a little concerning –

Right, so it’s been a very long time since I’ve updated, sorry, but all I can say is that I’ve been traveling and doing other stuff. Unfortunately I cant really talk about the other stuff yet, but when I get the chance I’ll update you on my travels.

I’ve never actually seen this much snow in Tokyo before, so it was rather interesting, if not slightly annoying. I dont particulary like snow. yeah, just watching this tv show that basically involves cutting to various cold places were people are running around in their swimsuits….
just to give you an idea of how cold it is here, it actually snowed today. first time this year. (probably the last two, but some is better than none – it didn’t snow at all last winter in Tokyo)

okay. anyway, I’ve been on holidays for a week now, and mum came to visit. Basically we ate a lot (that tends to be a trend when traveling with me). Some of the highlights were christmas lunch and then lights at Roppongi, traveling to Kusatsu – a town famous for onsen, and just spending time with me mum

I had to sleep with the light on….
Yep, I got sick again. My 3rd cold since it started getting cold this year. blah. So, because I was feeling pretty … blah today had to cancel my plans with Peter to go to Nikko. Maybe during New Year’s holidays.
So, just updating the dental situation, I got a filling just over a week ago done. The dentist said that if I had sensitivity for more than a couple of days its likely that I’ll have to get a root canal done. To be honest, I have had sensitivity since then, but Im still trying to decide if its a problem. Since i think it might have been caused by the damage he did to my gum will giving me the filling! He literally rubbed it raw, and its still not 100% healed. But I think further work can wait til I visit Aus again.
Last night we had our work Christmas party with all the students. There were about 50 people there in total, and it was pretty good fun. As usual I didn’t get to eat or drink enough because I was too busy talking… but what can you do? And afterwards we went to Karaoke until late in the night. In retrospect I really should have skipped karaoke since I was coming down with a cold. But goodtimes were had by all.
I think thats all for now. need to get some work done on my new years cards….

Last night Peter and I went to Dafunkfest, which was Tokyo’s version of Daft Punk’s Alive 2007. It went off!
The doors actually opened at 3pm, but we didnt get there til 6 since we didnt know any of the other acts and really, we aren’t techno-heds. We did however see sabastiAn who played the hour before Daft Punk. It was a pretty good set, but the cool thing was the lights in the arena. There were Japanese Lanterns hanging in chains and they were synched to the music, so they were sort of like giant equalizer lights. very funky. And sebastiAn finished their set with David Bowie what more could I ask for!
Daft Punk was an amazing show. As you can see, the set was pretty interesting, with all the lights and screens flashing and what not to the music. Words really cant describe how cool it was. And unfortunately it’s well and truly against copywrite to upload the videos I took… sorry… but heres a video off their official youtube site –

gee, i cant believe how behind i am…. well anyway.
Sunday was the JLPT so now that’s all over I can move on to other things. I think I did alright. Will get the results in mid-Feb. TouDai was similar to QUT in that the campus was just full of buildings. not all that exciting in the end.
This morning I woke up and had nothing to do. Felt strange. but Im sure I’ll put something else on my plate soon. Still, twas nice to have no study that needed to be done..

hehe, okay, TouDai is short for Tokyo University, and its the top university in Japan.
Alas, I am not going there to study, but to take the JLPT in December. But I’m getting a kick about going there, you hear so much about it, so Im looking forward to poking around one of it’s campuses.
now I just need to buckle down and study. ugh.
A quick update about the last week for you – its been halloween costume week at work, so I’ve put some photos up on flickr. I really enjoyed the week, its not like we have much opportunity to dress up for halloween in Aus. So I had 3 costumes – a pirate, death and Goku from Dragon Ball Z. When I get more photos I’ll link you.
the most memorable kids costumes would have to be a mini-Jack Sparrow, a sad clown and Spiderman. But all the kids were so cute! And the funniest moment (in a sick way) was when one kid saw me in my death costume and screamed, ran out of the school and about 50m away from the school…. in retrospect it was funny…..
On the otherside of the holiday, Im kinda glad its all over, it was a bit emotionally tiring. And i was actually glad to wear a suit to work today, because I could then easily go outside for food. (doing that in costume was a little daunting…)
