miniscule

the only, one, slightly, tiniest redeeming feature of today was one of my students cancelled his private half hour lesson.

other than that it was the day from hell.

that is all.

Amuse me…

23 05 2007

A couple of interesting things have happened at work over the past week.

Kaito, one of my kids is such a laugh (and thats great because he is the only kid in that class).  Last weeks vocab was ‘do judo’, so, he tries to do judo.  on me.  his technique seemed pretty good to me, however, being only 1/3 of my height, well, he just couldn’t flip me over his shoulder.  It was quite funny.

I also got a letter from another of my students, Kazumasa (kid also), saying “Let’s play together”  it was quite sweet.

Finally, on Tuesday evening, there was a fire in the neighboring apartment building at work, which resulted in a siren and warnings blaring out of the speaker systems for about 15 minutes.  Alas, when we finished work all the excitement was over.  I guess fire alarms and drills still give you the same kind of excitement as when you are a kid!

Golden Week and Thailand!

15 05 2007

Well, Im slowly working backwards to get this up-to-date.  Excuse my lax-ness in keeping my blog current.

Anyway.  About the first week of May in Japan is a holiday called Golden Week.  Its not a proper week holiday, but because there are about 3 or 4 public holidays in the week, most people have it all off.  The public holidays include Children’s day (formerly Boys day) and Green day (yes, the Japanese celebrate the Emperor who planted cedar trees everywhere and consequently causes great pains to hayfever sufferers come spring).    But because almost everyone has the time off, many places are very busy and crowded, and airfares overseas are very expensive.

Despite the high cost I decided to go to Thailand with one of the girls from work, Sophie.  We were only able to arrange to stay 4 nights, 5 days in Phuket, but it really was worth it.  Phuket is a tourist trap, and to be honest, I felt like I could have been at Noosa or somewhere on the Sunshine Coast – there were that many Aussies…..  Except the surf wasn’t good at all.  But it was still nice to go swimming everyday, and work on my tan.  (I only got a little burnt!)

So, what did we get up to?  Well, there was plenty of going to the beach, shopping, going to the beach, eating, drinking, going to the beach….  well, you get the idea.  We also took a day boat tour to Phi Phi Island, where part of the Beach was filmed.  I can honestly say that I have never seen water so beautiful.  It was more green than blue.  As part of the tour we also got to go snorkeling, which really didn’t tickle my fancy.  I guess I get a bit freaked out by fish…  But Sophie really enjoyed it.

Another day we went into Phuket town (we were staying at Patong Beach), and did a lot of walking around.  It was quite a curious place, the style of buildings were almost out of place.  But the temples were beautiful, and we didn’t even go the the famous one in the area.

Other impressions.  Well, you could hardly tell that Patong beach had been hit by the tsunami a few years back.  Although there were some signs of damage, most places had been repaired and it was all pretty nice, well, as nice as a beach side area can be.  I have to admit, even though you pay for beach chairs, the whole atmosphere on the beach is different because of them.  Its nice that all you have to do is signal and the guy will bring you over a beer or fruit or something.  Oh, and it was so nice having so much fresh fruit!

Overall, I enjoyed the holiday very much, but I can’t say I’ll ever go back to Phuket again.  However I do think that I will return to Thailand, maybe Bangkok or the north…..

As mentioned before, photos are online here.

映画館に行った~

13 05 2007

I finally got around to seeing Spiderman 3 this evening (you have no idea how much I love living near a movie theater)

but I left the cinema saying to myself…  snow patrol is stalking me….

Okay, so stalking is a little strong, but it feels like I hear them everywhere I go… and lo and behold, they have a song on the spiderman soundtrack.   grrrrrrrr!  argh!

I cannot describe how much I dislike snow patrol…  see, I wont even capitalize they name.  tisk tisk..  Its not that their music is bad, but they have been overplayed.  I *thought* I had escaped it when I left AUS, but, despite the fact I dont even own a radio here, I have still been hearing chasing cars….  which means it must have a high rotation or something….

But apart from that, the movie was pretty good, as well as the rest of the soundtrack (anything Danny Elfman does has my stamp of approval).  But I have to admit, it wasn’t as good as the last two.

I only really saw it for Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell.  Oh how I love their work!

other interesting things – it appears that there will be a new Neon Genesis Evangelion something released…  on my birthday too…  here’s some hearsay in english – http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2006-09-07/new-evangelion-movies

and, ahem, I went to Thailand by the way…  will write about that later…  in the meantime photos are here.

omgosh….  michele in her swimsuit (and Sophie too)  dont blink, it might be the last time you see it…..

Shunbun no Hi / Higan no Chu-Nichi

(VERNAL EQUINOX Day)

Like Fall Equinox, Vernal Equinox is one of the most traditional Japanese National Holidays. These holidays seem to have a double origin. One is the celebration of seasonal change typical of an agricultural society: this is the day when the day-time and the night-time are equal length. The actual date of the Vernal Equinox day may change from year to year due to leap year. Based on the Buddhist teaching, this Vernal Equinox is also called Higan no Chu-Nichi, as is Autumn Equinox on September 23rd. Many Japanese visit their family tombs on this day in the middle of the week of Higan to pay their respects to their ancestors. People weed their family tombs, and leave flowers, incense and ohagi (sweet rice balls covered with red bean paste). It is tradition that ancestors’ spirits prefer round food! Since ASIJ is next to Tama Bochi (Tama Cemetery), one of the largest cemeteries in the Tokyo area, we often experience heavy traffic on trains and highways on this day. Japanese consider this period the changing of the season, because it is usually around Higan that the cold front hanging over the Japanese islands weakens, and the weather changes to spring. Thus we have a saying “Atsusa samusa mo Higan made” (“Heat and cold last until Higan”).-http://www.asij.ac.jp/elementary/japan/jp_holi.html#mar20

whoo! its gonna get warmer!

Monday Xina and I went to Ghibli.  As always its a ton of fun.  It’s too bad you can’t take photos inside, its a pretty amazing place.  We also had lunch in Kichijoji as DevaDeva, a vegetarian place that makes pretty much everything they serve.  I tell you what, the burgers are goooooood!  But its a little difficult to find.  And to top the day off we had free tickets to see Blood Diamond in Nakano.  Twas a long day but pretty enjoyable.  Think we will be going back to Kichijoji on Monday again to see the cherry blossoms!

things that make me smile…

18 03 2007

Kids can do the funniest things.  The other day in class we were reviewing the ‘Can you see the ___’ sentence pattern, and just as I said ‘Can you see the…’ one of the kids in class jumped up and shouted out ‘T’ and made the shape of ‘T’ with his body.  It was so funny.  But pretty good at the same time for him to do it unprompted.  So I said ‘Good job!’  which was kind of a mistake, because he then proceeded to make some other letters, like ‘I’ and then, the final touch ‘K’ which involved standing on one leg with his arms in the air.  By now the mothers in the class had all broken out into laughter.  But it really was the cutest thing!

In that class I have 3 boys and 1 girl.  I think 2 of the boys like the girl…  At the end of each class we hold hands in a circle and sing the ‘goodbye song’.  When we do that 1 of the boys runs to hold the girl’s hand, and I swear its the fastest he moves all class.  He’s a really smart boy too.  Has some attention issues, but when he talks english you can actually have a very simple conversation with him.  And considering he’s about 3 years old, its brilliant.

Another class of mine has made me so glad that I used to watch Dragonball Z, because they are at the age when they are obessed by it.  Last week they decided we all needed Dragonball Z names…..  I ended up being the tall bald fellow with the third eye….  great….  The 1 girl in that class went from being the monkey ‘Bubbles’ to ‘Chichi’ (Goku’s wife) to King Kai.  Only the last one was acceptable to her….  But then, she’s a bit of a tomboy.

I’ve ordered a futon for my parents when they come here.  It was supposed to be delivered on Friday, but that didn’t happen.  They tried to deliver it yesterday, but I went to Disney with Peter, his brother and cousin.  So this morning the company rang me….  I hope I understood correctly, but I think they will be delivering it tomorrow morning.  Sometimes my japanese amazes me.  And I don’t really have confidence taking on the phone, so I’m pretty pleased with how that conversation went.

And, as I just mentioned, we went to Disneyland yesterday.  Twas a long day, but a good one.  I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that place.  When I get the photos from Pete I’ll post them to my flickr!
