Be intolerant of ignorance, but understanding of illiteracy. – Maya Angelou (Writer)
I started the 180 day reading track in my bible the day before last. I think that 6 months is a fairly big commitment. The next track however is reading the whole bible in 3 years… ![]()
Anyhow, you start off at genesis of course, and the first verse really struck me in a way. As a christian and a ‘physist’ (ehehe) its been really difficult for me to figure out just how the universe came in to being. I admit that I am a bit doubtful about the whole big bang theory, and evolution, although it has merits, also has some problems. But reading back over the first chapter Im seeing correlations with ‘intelligent design’ and other scientifically suggested theories.
As an example, the bible states – God created the heavens and the earth, light, night and day, and water and sky on the first day, which is kinda strikingly similar to how the universe is suggested to have been created. Ignoring whatever catalyst that caused it to exist in the first place, and the times taken, earth would have formed as a ball, while it was rotating about the sun. And before anything else could occur on the earth, it had to gather an atmosphere. And i believe the theory is that at least most of the earth was covered in water, or primordial soup as some like to say.
On the second day dry ground appeared and then vegetation. Well, now that the earth has an atmosphere things would change a lot! like water being absorbed into the atmosphere and *gasp* ground appearing. And naturally once life begins the simplest form would be plant life. However I do believe this occurred in the sea first….
On the third day the stars and the sun were created… well, we know these to be created before then anyway…. but technicalities….
Forth day – sea life and then bird life. Now I think the accepted theory is that land life was before sky(?)(you know, birds…) life. But sea life certainly was first…
On the fifth day land life and humans. Certainly plausible if you believe evolution.
On the sixth day…. errr, I think i’ve put something in another day that was supposed to be separate…. oh well.
Apart from a few errors, its a pretty plausible and simple way of stating how things came to be. But really, its up to you to decide for yourself. I do believe that we are not here by accident, and even if I dont fully agree with scientific theories of how we came to be, I do think it would have been a process, and the bible states this process in a very simple manner.

I agree with what you’ve said Michelle- the thing is that the creation story is in poetry and I think it is close enough to the ‘accepted thoery’ of evolution. Having to deal with scientists all day I’ve had to think about this alot and I believe that even if it was through evolution parts of it at least had to be guided by God. But all this fuss over creation confuses me a bit sometimes- I reckon as long as you believe God created it in some form thats enough and then you can get to the real message of the bible- which is of course about God’s love. oh and sea life would of come before land life- both in animals and plants.Timand good luck with the reading the bible all the way through- whenever i do that I get up to leviticus and give up! or just skip to Kings or something!
